Conversation starters used by Australians

Kate Russell, a curriculum writer at RMIT English Australia explains some typical conversation starters used by Australians.

I'm going to explain two more questions we use in Australia to start a conversation. The first is, what's been happening? This means, tell me what you've been doing since I last saw you. You answer it by telling the person all your news or if you don't have much to tell the person, you can say, "Nothing much."

Another question is one that we've copied from American English. What's up? This question can mean, tell me what you've been doing since we last talked. Or if you say it like this, "What's up?" It can mean, are you okay? Are you feeling sad? You can answer this question depending on the meaning. You can say, "Nothing much," or tell the person all your news or tell the person how you are feeling. My name's Kate and I'm a teacher and curriculum writer at RMIT English Worldwide.
