Foundation Studies Award Winners

Introducing our Foundation Studies Academic Excellence Award Recipients for semesters 1 and 2, 2023.

These five impressive individuals achieved the top student award in their respective study streams. 

Now, they're taking on exciting new challenges in fields as diverse as Health Science, Industrial Design, Creative Writing, and Environmental Engineering and Business. We're excited to celebrate their achievements as they continue on their pathway to success. 

Ngoc Minh Khue Nguyen

Ngoc Minh Khue

Home country: Vietnam

Foundation Studies Stream:  Engineering and Science

RMIT Pathway: Bachelor of Environmental Engineering

Our top Engineering and Science student for 2023, Ngoc Minh Khue is studying RMIT’s Bachelor of Environmental Engineering with the aim of becoming an Environmental Consultant or Environmental Engineer. 

“I hope to work in different countries and help the environment become cleaner and greener”, she says. 

“I know I’m just a small part of the community, but I hope to contribute towards the campaign of preserving the environment.”

Ngoc Minh Khue says studying with Foundation Studies was a great first step before university. The subjects she took were relevant to her current studies, and she was able to build the professional vocabulary required for her major, with support from our friendly and enthusiastic Academic Support team. 

Living and studying in Melbourne has enabled her to meet people from other countries as well as exchange different cultures, languages and perspectives.

Foundation Studies Stream: Communication and Social Context

RMIT Pathway: Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing)

Marco has always had a knack for writing. 

And after honing his craft with Foundation Studies, achieving the top Communication and Social Context student award along the way, he’s set his sights on becoming a renowned author or English Literature Teacher by undertaking RMIT’s Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing.

“The ability to create and sculpt worlds out of words, to engage in the story no matter how ludicrous, is to be the god of a written page. 

“Such ability is intoxicating, and with my studies at RMIT, I wish to enhance these abilities and better put my mind to paper.”

Marco says his year with Foundation Studies really helped him prepare for university life. 

“It sets the expectation of what we'll need to do, while also allowing us to become accommodated with Melbourne life.”

He’s now enjoying working on his writing with students, lecturers and practitioners from across the creative industries.

“There are many of those who are very talented and have interesting stories around me.”

Foundation Studies Study Stream: Business 

RMIT Pathway: Bachelor of Business 

Shawn Low is on the way to achieving his goal of becoming an entrepreneur, undertaking a Bachelor of Business at RMIT University.

Our top student for 2023 in Business, Shawn says RMIT Training provided an excellent foundation for his university studies, and he is really enjoying student life at RMIT.

“I’ve always had a passion for the business industry and wanted to gain more knowledge about it,” he says. 

“Many of the topics and techniques I already know thanks to Foundation Studies. It has made the process at university much easier.  

“I’ve met a lot of good people and done some amazing assessments”.

Foundation Studies Stream: Art, Design, and Architecture

RMIT Pathway: Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours) 

Yi Ning excelled in Foundation Studies’ Art, Design and Architecture (ADA) and is now studying a Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours) at RMIT University.

She hopes to pursue a career in user experience/user interface (UX/UI) design or product design in the future, but is excited to explore the wide range of possibilities that a degree in design can offer in the meantime. 

“It’s a course that could potentially lead me to different fields as I discover my true passion along the way,” she says. “I am learning many new things and have numerous opportunities to explore new interests.”

During her studies with Foundation Studies, Yi Ning says she gained a deeper understanding of Art, Design and Architecture principles, while living and studying in Melbourne provided further inspiration.

“I appreciated the course's multifaceted nature, which allowed us to delve into the fundamentals of various arts and design aspects. 

“As a design student, being in a city so rich in diverse artistic and design influences is incredibly inspiring. Melbourne offers world-class arts, lively festivals, and community events, making it an ideal place to study and grow.”

Foundation Studies Study Stream: Health

Academic Pathway: Bachelor of Health Sciences, Monash University

Xuyen achieved the top grade in Foundation Studies’ Health stream, and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences at Monash University. 

She is excited to discover her niche in the diverse field of health sciences.

“I’m a person who has a passion for science, and am on a journey to find an industry that best suits me – so I chose to study this to understand health sciences in general.”

Xuyen says the Foundation Studies Health Stream was an excellent step in preparing her for university life.

“From the practical reports I worked on in the laboratory, or the research that I had to perform in my field at Foundation Studies – it all helped me a lot with the reviews at University.”
