Technology tips – grammar

Do you want to improve your grammar? Here are some websites that you can use independently, with grammar explanations, practise activities, quizzes and games.

If you find a difficult activity or don’t understand an explanation, print it and make a booking with Study Support to discuss it.

Tense Buster

Tense Buster is a program that is accessible through the RMIT website. It explains the rules and has practice activities for all grammar topics. It is good for all levels.

The British Council

The British Council has developed a wide range of mobile apps for learning English for different devices such as iPhone, iPad, Nokia, Samsung and Android. The apps include podcasts, a soap opera, quizzes, games and exercises to help you improve your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

The website also has a range of activities for listening and writing practice. Click here to visit the British Council website.

Both apps and the website are good for all levels.

English Club

The English Club website has explanations about grammar terms, vocabulary and sentence structures. Word-level grammar focuses on nouns, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions. Sentence-level grammar focuses on things like sentence structure, reported speech, use of direct/indirect objects and linking phrases. It also has quizzes to test yourself and games to help you practice. It is good for all levels.

Online Grammar

The Online Grammar website answers specific grammar questions in the Grammar Tip section. Try this website, if you want more information about punctuation topics or commonly confused word pair topics. It is good for L5-7.

Grammarly Blog

The Grammarly blog is the help page that goes with the Grammarly app.

It focuses on grammar, punctuation and writing styles. It is good for L5-7.

CILL

The CILL website has a complicated contents list which covers an enormous range of topics. There are grammar practice resources and quizzes to test yourself. The explanations all have good examples of how to use each idea. It is good for L5-7.
